Over recent months there have been several reports of intruders on driveways, thefts of items from cars and, in two instances, the theft of vehicles within the area. This follows a lot of night-time activity last summer which, prior to this year, had not resulted in any thefts.
REPORTING INSTANCES TO THE POLICE DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. In September last, after resident reports of driveway intruders, police made three arrests in our area showing how valuable our vigilance and reporting can be.
After the reports of recent activity in the area an increased Police presence was seen in several of our roads. However, we know that unfortunately not all crime or attempted crimes are being reported.
Please report any suspicious activity to the police. For emergencies call 999, or 101 for non-urgent matters. Please also highlight any problems to our NHW Officer, David, using the below email.
The thieves are able to by-pass car security using devices that detect and relay key signals from the house and enable the car to be opened and started. Turning off “keyless entry” can prevent this. Faraday pouches for your keys can be effective but for high-value cars, thieves are willing to break into properties in order to obtain the keys. Visible deterrents such as steering wheel or crook locks remain highly effective.
The WHERA Committee includes representation from NHW but it is a separate organisation with different email distributions. Anyone wishing to be added to the NHW mail list should contact David Wolstenholme on: dw.wolstenholme@gmail.com
